Staff Spotlight: The Creative

Where a love for bringing unique thoughts to life and a natural talent collide, that’s where you’ll find this creative. Assistant ITM Manager by day and multi-media artist in her free time, meet Linsey!

Since she could hold a crayon, Linsey has been drawing on things. Whether that was on things she was supposed to draw on, we didn’t ask! But what started as a fun childhood activity evolved into something more the day her dad brought home their first computer, a rarity at the time. That home computer would prove pivotal to Linsey’s creative growth.

“Shortly after bringing that computer home, my dad showed me Microsoft Paint, and I was hooked,” Linsey shared. “I played around with that program constantly, and everyone was amazed at all I could do with it. That was the first time I realized I had some real natural talent.”

Outside of the art classes she gravitated toward in school, Linsey is completely self-taught. Like any other skill, the more you practice, the better you get. Linsey is a self-proclaimed dabbler when it comes to trying new materials. Anytime something new comes out, she’ll try it. She’s honed her craft by experimenting with new methods and through lots of trial and error.

“One of my favorite projects to date is a stained-glass light box. I had this idea to use a shadow box with lights inside and could picture exactly what it would look like,” Linsey explained. “Well, about ten to twenty tests later, I was able to get the formula just right to reduce bubbles and keep the paint from shrinking. Now I’ve got what a picture plus more than a dozen others making up a wall full of light-up shadow boxes.”

The saying, art is in the eye of the beholder, comes to mind. In this case, even her imperfect test boxes are art just the same. While Linsey loves hands-on, physical art media like alcohol markers and pen and ink, she tends to gravitate toward digital art because no supplies are needed. Fitting, because it’s also where she consciously recognized her knack for art for the first time.

In her Etsy shop, Art by Linsey, you can explore and purchase her digital prints, but it doesn’t end there. She’s been known to do portraits (including some pretty epic period-inspired pieces for her department) and is always open to commissions. At its core, Linsey is just in it for the love and freedom of creating.

“Sometimes I see things in my mind that don’t entirely make sense. I most love trying to capture those ideas and make them into something tangible, unique, and beautiful,” Linsey smiled.
