6 Practices to Beat Identity Theft
Protecting your identity continues to get more critical each year. According to Experian, in 2021, consumer identity theft complaints rose 3.3% to just over 1.43 million. That’s a lot! And it's why our experts have compiled these best practices to help you combat identity theft.
#1 – Always be skeptical of calls and texts.
If it doesn’t feel or sound right, it probably isn’t! When you get a call or text claiming to be your financial institution, someone needing help, or about your Amazon account, don’t engage! Hang up (or don’t reply), find the company’s trusted phone number, and call back.
#2 – Be selective about the information you share and who you share it with.
Have you checked the information you share on your social media pages lately? Do you know everyone who is following you? Have you shared your personal information in the comments of a public post? Be mindful of what you share and who can see it! We suggest making your social accounts private, removing all identifying information (email, phone number, maiden name, etc.), and only allowing those you know to follow you.
#3 – Make a plan for safe document storage and destruction.
From tax returns to junk mail and everything in between, your personal identifying information is included on many documents. We recommend having a plan to store your documents (like a safe or fireproof box) and properly dispose of them (like a personal shredder.)
#4 – Boost your password safety practices.
Having unique passwords for each online account is essential. But how do you remember them all? A password manager allows you to generate, store, and access all your passwords while only having to remember one master password. And several managers have free options!
#5 – Take advantage of account alert features.
Know exactly what your card is being used for in the moment and prevent fraud before it happens with Card Controls and Alerts. Enable or disable your BHFCU cards, set spending limits, create alerts, and choose transaction types, all from Online Banking or the Mobile App. Have cards from other financials? Check what security measures they offer too!
#6 – Regularly monitor and protect your credit.
Did you know that as a BHFCU member, you can review your credit report for free in Online Banking or the Mobile App? Catch any unusual activity and learn how to increase your credit score in one place! Another great tool is a credit freeze, preventing new accounts from being opened in your name should your personal information be compromised. All three credit reporting bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion) offer free credit freezes.
