Protect Yourself: New Tap-to-Pay Donation Scam Targeting Shoppers

A new scam is affecting communities across the Midwest. Fraudsters are targeting shoppers outside stores, in parking lots, and at intersections with a scheme exploiting contactless payment technology.

How It Works

A stranger approaches you with an emotional story. They need help with funeral expenses, a sick family member, or another emergency. They start by asking for a small donation using tap-to-pay with your credit or debit card.

The scammer then offers to "help" by holding your phone or guiding you through the payment, possibly covering the screen or rushing you. While you may believe you're donating $5, they're actually charging your card hundreds of dollars or more. They may even tap your card multiple times before you realize what's happened.
By the time you realize what’s happened, the scammer has disappeared, and you're left trying to dispute charges.

What to Watch For

  • Someone approaching you with an urgent, emotional story requesting donations
  • Insistence on card payment only
  • Offering to hold your phone or card to "help" with the transaction
  • Covering the payment screen or rushing you through the process

How to Protect Yourself

  • Stay in control. Never let a stranger hold your phone or card. If you can't clearly see the transaction amount on the screen, don't tap.
  • Verify before you pay. Always confirm the exact amount before making any payment.
  • Enable security features. Set up Face ID or fingerprint authentication for mobile payments and activate real-time transaction alerts on your accounts.
  • Trust your instincts. If something feels off or you're being pressured, it's okay to walk away. Legitimate charitable organizations don't operate this way.
  • Monitor your accounts. Check your statements regularly and report any suspicious charges to us immediately.
