How to Stay Safe on Shared Computers & Devices

It is essential to keep cybersecurity top-of-mind. When using a public or shared device, remember the following to keep your personal information safe.

Limit access to shared computers.
If you share a computer with your family or roommates, make sure everyone knows to limit device access to anyone outside the group. Keeping device access to a small, trusted group is paramount when possible.

Avoid accessing sensitive information.
When you can, avoid accessing sensitive information on public computers. When possible, do not log in to your personal accounts when utilizing public computers such as at a hotel or library. It is also important to limit or avoid using public wireless networks when accessing your personal accounts.

Log out when you’re done.
Of course, there will be times when your only option is a public device. When those situations arise, ensure you log out of all personal accounts immediately when you’ve finished your task. A quick clearing of browser history will add an additional line of defense.

Keep your passwords secure.
No matter if you’re using a personal, shared, or public device, always keep your passwords secure. Avoid writing down passwords and keeping them near your device; this presents a security risk. Instead, invest in a free or paid subscription to a password keeping service.

Use a complex password.
Having a secure password means it’s not easy to crack. Be sure to use a password that you can remember but is also complex enough that another person cannot guess it. Take a look at the most common passwords from last year and make sure yours is not on the list.
