BHFCU Gives: Helping Fight Hunger in Q3

Our Community Action Team brings employees and the community together to give back to local non-profit organizations in meaningful ways. A combination of monetary paycheck donations from employees, matching funds from the credit union, and physical donations made from BHFCU team and community members makes for a big impact. This quarter, we focused on getting food in the hands of those who need it.
 

How Are You Fighting Hunger?

We saw so much success with our two-pronged approach last year that we decided to run it back. Don’t fix something if it isn’t broken, right? We asked employees to each contribute a set of peanut butter and jelly, and our communities to pitch in with shelf-stable staples.

Who is Benefiting?

From statewide and regional organizations to small local pantries, we wanted to make sure we helped at as many levels as possible. These hunger-fighting non-profits include: The Banquet and Kids Against Hunger in Sioux Falls; Billings Family Services and the Education Foundation for Billings Public Schools in Billings; Pierre Area Referral Services and Governor’s Grocery in Pierre; Meals on Wheels, The Storehouse, Hill City Community Food Pantry, Hot Springs Ministerial Association Food Pantry, Piedmont Valley Food Pantry, Sturgis Food Pantry, Spearfish Community Food Pantry, and the Wall Country Cupboard in the Black Hills area; and Feeding South Dakota.

Did You Say Department Challenge?

Our tradition of competition lived up to the hype in Q3. We challenged each employee to contribute one peanut butter and one jelly, and they answered the call! Overall, 19 departments and branches collected 209 sets of peanut butter and jelly. You read that right – that’s 418 items!
 

What’s Better Than a Partnership?

Doing good is better with friends! And we really couldn’t have done it alone. We partnered with several local businesses to collect non-perishables meant to stay in their communities. Special thanks to our business partners Krull's Market, Timmon's Market, Wall Food Center, Sonny Superfoods, 4E Foods, Sioux Falls Food Coop, Grocery Mart, and Lynn's Dakotamart locations in Box Elder, Custer, Hot Springs, Sturgis, and Summerset.
