Spear Phishing | Latest Scam Affecting our Members

Whether it’s by phone, email, social media, or even physical mail, scammers and identity thieves use a variety of tactics to earn your trust and deceive you out of your hard-earned money. If you don’t think you’ll ever be a target, think again!
Here is an example of a spear phishing scam affecting BHFCU’s members:

The situation: According to Fred’s phone, the call was coming from his financial institution. It was the same phone number he’d called dozens of times since opening his account. He quickly answered. The nice lady on the other end informed Fred that someone had recently placed a fraudulent charge on his debit card ending in 8888. She assured him everything would be alright. However, to stop the unauthorized activity, she would need Fred’s full card number, the card’s expiration date, and the CVV number. Fred happily told her everything she needed to know. Days later, Fred discovered he’d been scammed.
By combining two tactics – spear phishing and caller ID/email spoofing – scammers are hoping to trick you into thinking a call or email is from a company or person you trust. Often they will use some familiar details like the last four digits of your credit card or Social Security Number, a physical address, or email to try and deceive you into providing more information. Known as spear phishing, the scammers most likely acquired these details by some other means. Additionally, scammers are able to mask their caller ID and/or email address to make the call/email seem like it’s coming from an actual organization. Don’t be fooled!
Of note, BHFCU and our Fraud Service Center will NEVER ask you to disclose any personal or financial information. If you do receive a phone call from BHFCU, we will always utilize our unique member verification process to confirm your identity. Be aware that you may always ask to call us back.

Watch for these potential warning signs
  • Be wary of phone calls, emails, or texts asking for your personal or financial information. If you’re unsure, ask for a name and extension number, and call us back at 605-718-1818.
  • Don’t trust someone just because they have some of your personal or financial information. Scammers are hoping to trick you into giving up even more information.
  • Remember, it’s easier than you might think to make it look like a call or email is coming from someone you trust. Stay alert and ask questions.
