People Helping People - October 2022

At BHFCU, our commitment to improving lives in the communities we serve is as strong as ever. In October, our team found ways to do positive things across South Dakota. Learn more below.

Volunteering at Western Hills Humane Society
Several members of our Spearfish team and their families spent time with four-legged friends at the Western Hills Humane Society this month! We also contributed $600 to rescue efforts in the area.

Keeping Rapid City Clean
Leave it better than you found it! A group of our staff did just that in Rapid City over a weekend this month, cleaning up trash at a park. Thank you for helping keep South Dakota beautiful!

Readiatrics Book Drive Donation
Earlier this year, our West River locations collected nearly 1,600 books for the Readiatrics Book Drive. Made up of a wide variety of books, our donation will now make it into the hands of kids across western South Dakota through the South Dakota Department of Health. We also donated $700 for the purchase of additional books!

Oahe Youth Hockey Facility Donation
We recently donated $5,000 to the Oahe Hockey Association as a part of their campaign to improve the Oahe Youth Hockey Facility in Pierre. Thanks to this organization, Pierre and Ft. Pierre residents have access to many ice activities.

Grilling in Hot Springs
When the city of Hot Springs called for help improving city parks, we knew we wanted to be involved. Our donation of nearly $1,500 purchased a new barbeque grill for Brookside Park. The grill was recently installed for use by the community!

Veterans Supply Drive
During October, we collected supplies and monetary donations for Veterans across South Dakota. We donated supplies and a total of $1,200 to the Hot Springs VA, Sioux Falls VA, and Fort Meade VA in Sturgis.

Share the Warmth Blanket Drive
We recently wrapped up our annual Share the Warmth Blanket Drive. With the $1,500 raised by staff, we purchased 44 blankets, 9 sets of sheets, and 18 pillowcases, AND donated the remaining $680 to the Cornerstone Rescue Mission in Rapid City.

Halloween Costume Contest for a Cause
Our annual costume contest was a roaring success! Staff members dressed in individual or group costumes for a chance to win one of four coveted category prizes. Contest donations totaled $800 benefiting the Children’s Home Society in the Black Hills.
